Film: March 2007 Archives
It's an interesting pseudo-documentary-and-musical by French virtuoso Jean-Luc Godard. It had been recommended to me about a year ago by Sean, but I think it's good that I waited until now to view it, since my interest in the Rolling Stones has grown considerably in the past few months.
Scenes of the band playing different, stripped-down version of their song, Sympathy for the Devil, are interspersed with other vignettes that seem to deal with Black Power, anarchism, and pornography. One scene, in which a woman is vehemently interviewed about her political beliefs while walking through a park, seemed almost nearly copied verbatim from Godard's earlier Masculin Feminin. But he's allowed to do that because he's an auteur.
I've decided that some day I will go to a foreign country in Europe or Asia, and film a series of real-life vignettes by the people I meet there. Then I'll edit the footage so that the sequence makes coherent sense, based on the emotions being conveyed, and the way the language is delivered. I'm not sure if I'll have somebody translate the film when it's done; perhaps not, because it would derail my intention.
I think it could be beautiful.
